Emergency

For in the day of trouble, he will keep me safe in the shelter of his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tent; he will set me high upon a rock.

Psalm 27:5

At Made to Walk, our goal is to help your organization build a crisis management plan that you hope you’ll never need—but are fully prepared to use if the situation arises. Emergencies can happen at any time, and having a well-developed emergency response plan is crucial for the safety and security of your staff, volunteers, and community.
Depending on where you're located, your organization may face various natural disasters such as tornadoes, wildfires, hurricanes, or other environmental crises that can cause significant damage. It’s essential that everyone involved—whether staff or volunteers—understands what to do in the event of an environmental emergency, including gas leaks, building fires, or health emergencies.
With a clear, actionable crisis response plan in place, you ensure that everyone knows their role and responsibilities, allowing for a swift, coordinated response. Our goal is to help you minimize confusion, ensure safety, and maintain the well-being of your community, no matter what type of crisis may arise.

Emergency FAQ

Do I have to have an emergecy plan?

At a minimum, your facility should provide access to fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and clear emergency exits as part of your emergency preparedness plan. However, it's not enough to simply have these items on hand—you must ensure that all staff and volunteers are well-informed about the plan and understand how it will be executed in the event of an emergency.
We strongly encourage organizations to go beyond just having the necessary equipment. A comprehensive crisis management plan should include detailed instructions for responding to emergencies and should be communicated clearly to everyone involved. Proper training and emergency drills ensure that your team can act quickly and effectively, minimizing confusion and enhancing safety when it matters most.

What if we don't have many natural disasters in my area?

The first part of your crisis management plan should focus on addressing in-house risks, such as electrical fires, power outages, and other potential building-related hazards. Ensuring your facility is equipped with the proper safety protocols for these risks is essential for maintaining a safe environment.
If your area is less prone to natural disasters, we recommend researching the emergency resources needed in neighboring regions that may face such challenges. Your church or non-profit could play a vital role in providing support during times of crisis by equipping resources to assist neighboring cities or states. This might include preparing hurricane buckets, tornado tarp training, or hygiene kits—critical supplies that can make a significant difference in the aftermath of a disaster.
By broadening your scope and preparing to serve others in times of need, your organization can extend its reach and be a beacon of help in the wider community.

Won't an emergency training scare new volunteers?

Studies show that increased participation and higher retention rates are directly linked to organizations that offer ongoing training and education opportunities, particularly when these resources are provided by upper management. When leadership actively invests in the development of staff and volunteers, it not only improves individual performance but also fosters a stronger, more engaged team.
Providing access to continuous learning helps employees feel supported, valued, and empowered, which leads to greater long-term commitment and overall success for the organization.
